How to Clean the Beater Brush

The beater bar brush on a vacuum cleaner collects hairs and other similar debris as the vacuum is pushed back and forth across the rug. This dirt accumulates and can affect the efficiency of the vacuum cleaner. Occasional cleanings of the brush and the surrounding parts keeps the vacuum running smoothly and functioning properly.

  1. First: Getting started

To start, get some newspaper and lay it out on the floor. Unplug the vacuum, and then set it on top of the newspaper, upside down, to access the housing around the brush. Using a screwdriver, take out the screws on the plate that covers the brush area. Set them aside. Next, look closely at the bar and find the slotted end that is connected to the housing. Slide the bar out of the slot on the side opposite the belt end, this relieves tension on the belt so it is easier to remove the other side. Now, slide out the belt end and take the bar out completely.

  2. Second: Cut away the debris

Using an old pair of scissors or a knife, snip away the trapped hairs from around the brush. Ensure that the area by the bearings and around where the brush is connected is thoroughly cleaned.

  3. Third: Check the spin of the bar

Test the bearings on the beater bar brush by checking whether the brush spins freely on the axis. If not, take off the end by unscrewing it and taking it off. Clean away any debris that is underneath the cap, then replace it. Repeat this on the other side.

  4. Fourth: Clean out the surrounding area

While the bottom part is disassembled, remove any visible debris trapped in nooks and crannies of the vacuum base.

  5. Fifth: Reassemble

Put the beater bar brush back onto the vacuum by sliding it through the belt first, then slipping it into the notches on the housing to secure it in place. Make sure the belt is correctly situated. Next, replace the screws and tighten them back into place.
